The word of God or the fashion of the time?

I'm currently contemplating how much of the Anglican Christian faith reflects Roman society. In the marriage service it still says "who giveth this man to this woman" - that little gem directly reflects Roman society and Roman attitudes. I wonder what else is woven into the fabric of our faith that is not the word of God but is merely a reflection of the attitudes of society in which something was written - the fashion of the time?
